This project used a participatory action research approach in a two-phase, mixed-methods design. The first phase involved hourlong qualitative interviews about individuals’ firearm-related attitudes, beliefs, and practices, experiences of firearm-related violence and suicide, and beliefs about injury prevention. Individuals interviewed included firearm-owners as well as individuals living in areas with high rates of firearm violence, all living in the southeast region of the United States. project grip
The second phase was a quantitative examination of a social-ecological model of risk for intentional firearm-related injury that was borne out of the qualitative data collected in Phase 1. This was conducted in a national sample as well as in a local high school sample.
